The Basque Country packs an outsized cultural punch into a small stretch of Atlantic coastline. Euskera, the Basque language, predates the arrival of Indo-European languages in Europe and is unrelated to Spanish or any neighbouring tongue — a marker of an identity that has remained distinct through Roman, Visigothic and Spanish rule alike. San Sebastián and Bilbao anchor the region's food and culture: San Sebastián's pintxo bars hold more Michelin stars per capita than almost anywhere on earth, while Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum transformed a post-industrial port city into an architectural pilgrimage site.
Basque festivals lean loud, communal and food-centred. San Sebastián's Tamborrada opens January with over 15,000 drummers filling the streets from midnight; Bilbao's Aste Nagusia and San Sebastián's Semana Grande both bring nine days of free concerts, fireworks and the giant effigy Marijaia each August. Basque gastronomic societies (txokos), traditionally male-only members' clubs built around cooking and eating together, remain a genuine feature of local life and occasionally open their doors to visitors during festivals.

Aste Nagusia
Aste Nagusia (Great Week) is Bilbao's biggest annual celebration. For nine days in August, the Basque city transforms with concerts, fireworks, street theatre, and the beloved Marijaia figure presiding over it all. It's a free, open festival with incredible energy.

Semana Grande San Sebastián
Semana Grande (Aste Nagusia in Basque) is San Sebastián's biggest annual celebration, transforming the elegant coastal city into a week-long party every August. Centred around the International Fireworks Competition over La Concha Bay, the festival combines world-class pyrotechnics with concerts, traditional Basque sports, street theatre and gastronomy. It's the cultural highlight of summer in the Basque Country.

Tamborrada de San Sebastián
At the stroke of midnight on 20 January, the entire city of San Sebastián erupts into drums. The Tamborrada is one of Spain's most extraordinary traditions: for exactly 24 hours, over 15,000 drummers in more than 100 companies parade through the streets, playing without pause until midnight strikes again. Dressed as soldiers and cooks, they honour their patron saint — San Sebastián — in a thunderous celebration that defines Basque identity and civic pride.

The San Sebastián Film Festival (SSIFF) is one of Europe’s most prestigious film festivals, held annually in September in Donostia-San Sebastián, with premieres, industry activity, and public screenings.
How to Get There
Bilbao Airport is the region's main international gateway, with growing European connections; San Sebastián has a smaller airport with limited routes, often supplemented by flying into Biarritz just across the French border. High-speed rail from Madrid reaches Bilbao in around 3.5 hours. San Sebastián and Bilbao are well connected to each other by train and bus, roughly an hour apart.
Tips & Advice
Book far ahead for Semana Grande and Aste Nagusia in August — both cities fill up fast during these overlapping festival weeks. Pintxo-bar etiquette is informal: order at the bar, keep your toothpicks to be counted at the end, and hop between several bars rather than settling into one. Tamborrada in January is loud enough that earplugs are worth packing if you're sensitive to noise.
