BBK Live takes place on Mount Cobetas, a hilltop setting above Bilbao that offers panoramic views of the Basque coastline. Since 2006, it has grown into one of Spain's most important music festivals.

The lineup mixes major international headliners with Spanish and Basque acts. Past headliners include The Killers, Depeche Mode, Florence + The Machine, Arcade Fire, and Rosalia. The festival's compact size and hilltop setting create an intimate atmosphere despite attracting 40,000+ daily visitors.

Combine with Bilbao's world-class cultural scene: the Guggenheim Museum, the old town's pintxos bars, and the stunning Basque coastline are all within easy reach.

History & Origins

BBK Live launched in 2006 and quickly established itself alongside Primavera Sound and FIB as one of Spain's "big three" music festivals. Sponsored by BBK (Bilbao Bizkaia Kutxa), it has survived to become the Basque Country's flagship cultural event.

What to Expect

Music from afternoon to late night across multiple stages. The hilltop setting means spectacular sunsets as a backdrop. The crowd is a mix of Spanish and international festivalgoers. Basque food stalls (pintxos, txuleton) are a cut above typical festival fare.

How to Get There

By Air: Bilbao Airport (BIO) with flights from most European cities. By Train: RENFE from Madrid (5h) or Barcelona (6.5h). Festival shuttles from Bilbao centre to Mount Cobetas.

Tips & Advice

  • Camp on-site for the full experience — the hilltop sunrises are incredible
  • Spend a day in Bilbao before/after for the Guggenheim and pintxos
  • Shuttle buses run from Bilbao centre to the festival
  • Bring layers — Basque Country evenings can be cool even in July
  • Try the txakoli (local sparkling white wine) at the festival bars

Tamborrada de San Sebastián

San Sebastián, Basque Country

At the stroke of midnight on 20 January, the entire city of San Sebastián erupts into drums. The Tamborrada is one of Spain's most extraordinary traditions: for exactly 24 hours, over 15,000 drummers in more than 100 companies parade through the streets, playing without pause until midnight strikes again. Dressed as soldiers and cooks, they honour their patron saint — San Sebastián — in a thunderous celebration that defines Basque identity and civic pride.
