Navarra

Navarra is small — only two festivals feature on this site — but one of them, San Fermín, is arguably the most famous fiesta in Spain. The Running of the Bulls through Pamplona's old town each July has made this Pyrenean region a household name far beyond Spain's borders, immortalised by Ernest Hemingway and drawn out over nine days of bull-running, bullfights, fireworks and civic celebration. Outside that single week, Navarra is a quieter, greener region than its festival fame suggests: rolling farmland gives way to Pyrenean foothills in the north, and the Camino de Santiago's French route crosses the region on its way toward Galicia.

Navarra sits at a cultural crossroads between Basque and broader Spanish identity — Basque is spoken in parts of the region, and Pamplona shares some culinary and cultural DNA with neighbouring San Sebastián. San Fermín Txikito, the quieter September counterpart to the July festival, gives a sense of what Pamplona is like when the crowds go home: a compact, walkable capital proud of a tradition that runs deeper than its most famous nine days.
