Cantabria is a compact strip of Atlantic coastline between Asturias and the Basque Country, small enough to cross in a single day but dense with landscape variety: beaches and fishing villages along the coast give way within an hour's drive to the limestone peaks of the Picos de Europa. Santander, the regional capital, retains a genteel, slightly formal character from its history as a royal summer retreat, complete with the Palacio de la Magdalena built for King Alfonso XIII overlooking the bay.

How to Get There
Santander Airport (Seve Ballesteros) has domestic and limited European routes, popular with budget carriers. By rail or road, Santander is around 4.5 hours from Madrid. The region's small size makes a car practical for combining coast and mountain visits in a short trip.
Tips & Advice
Book Altamira cave visits ahead — the original cave is closed to general visitors to protect the paintings, but the adjacent museum includes a highly accurate replica and remains genuinely worth the trip. Cantabria's Atlantic weather is unpredictable year-round; pack a layer regardless of season.
